HistoryThe city of El Paso built the first El Paso municipal Airport. El Paso Airport is ideally located just 6 miles away from downtown El Paso and 3.7 miles from the interstate A visit from a man named Charles lindbergh inspired people to construct the municipal airport. On September 24,1927 the El Paso aero club began drawing up plans for a municipal airport. Then a year later on September 8, 1928 at 1:30pm 10,000 El Pasoans turned out for the dedication ceremony of their first municipal airport. At the end of the ceremony of september 8, 1928 Mayor Thompson said “ today we drive another state in progress of El Paso. Mayor Thompson proved to be a gifted prophet. This city becomes one of the country’s future air centers. The airport was built as a standard airlines in 1929 for transcontinental airmail service.During World War 2 the airport was a United States Army air forces training base. Units which trained at El Paso army airfield served with the 8th air force in England And 20th air force in saipan. In 1942 was divided functionally by executive order into three autonomous forces: the army ground forces, the service of supply army service forces. ad. speak In 1945 it was closed and used as a cement factory,plane port.The El Paso Airport has always prided itself on using the absolutely latest technology and in 1968, built the country's tallest control tower . {Control Tower = a tall building at an airport from which the movements of air and runway traffic are controlled}.
